Anti-Spyware Software Development Kit Released

InterMute First to Enable ISVs to Accelerate Time to Market When Creating Enterprise Anti-Spyware Solutions

BRAINTREE, Mass., Oct. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- InterMute, Inc., a leading provider of Internet security and content filtering solutions, today announced the SpySubtract® Software Development Kit (SDK), to allow independent software vendors (ISVs) to efficiently develop Enterprise Anti-Spyware solutions for their enterprise security customers.
InterMute is licensing their modular anti-spyware SDK, built with industry-standard Microsoft Visual Studio C++, to provide developers with a fast way to enhance existing security software products, to protect against spyware threats. Modularity and portability have been designed into the SpySubtract code base from day one. Plus, InterMute's technology is field proven; no other anti-spyware solution ships pre-loaded on more new PCs than InterMute's SpySubtract PRO.

Spyware is everywhere and it has become a major concern for Enterprise IT managers. Keyboard loggers, browser monitors, malware and Trojans are now running loose inside the enterprise. Traditional enterprise security solutions were not designed to handle spyware threats. Spyware programs can open up data feeds to the Internet and may pass confidential data right through traditional network defenses. This translates into major security concerns, lost time and diminished productivity throughout the organization.

Security vendors that produce corporate firewalls, anti-virus, intrusion detection, proxy servers, web-filtering, or other security software or appliances are now being asked by their customers to enhance their offerings with anti-spyware capabilities.

"Time-to-market for security software is crucial," says Ed English CEO of InterMute, Inc. "Unlike bloated and slow anti-spyware solutions that are built with hobbyist languages and compilers, InterMute's SpySubtract SDK is a lean, mean spyware-fighting machine."

The SpySubtract SDK provides the fast path to integrating anti-spyware technology into existing ISV products. InterMute's SpySubtract SDK can accelerate an ISV's time-to-market by enhancing existing security products with robust anti-spyware technology. To offer the most competitive, comprehensive and up-to-date protection, providers of network security products must include strong anti-spyware defenses.

The SpySubtract Engine is a powerful API (Application Program Interface), designed to enable ISVs easily and reliably to add sophisticated spyware detection and removal functionality to their own applications or perimeter gateway devices.

Built on the industry-standard Microsoft Visual C++ development platform, the SpySubtract Engine provides a set of COM-based components and interfaces that add spyware detection and removal capabilities to another program. The interfaces allow applications to perform spyware detection and removal tasks, including:

-- Scanning for spyware, including checking an individual file
-- Cleaning spyware that has been detected
-- Backup and restoration of files to be removed
-- Configuration of the SpySubtract engine
-- Management of whitelists, which allows exclusion of specified items
from scanning
-- Management of blacklists, which allows automatic deletion of known
spyware or other unwanted processes during a scan

The SpySubtract Engine is ideal for constructing a multi-layered solution to protect corporations from spyware. This includes:

-- Perimeter Defense Protection at the network/gateway level, to intercept
spyware before it can infect enterprise PC systems
-- Desktop Protection at the local PC level, with scanning and cleaning of
an individual user's system
-- SpySubtract Updates to distribute efficiently the latest signatures and
definition files that combat more recently developed forms of spyware

The SpySubtract Software Development Kit includes source code examples that demonstrate how developers can quickly integrate the SpySubtract Engine for building robust anti-spyware capabilities into their own security applications and devices. For example, the ScanFile code sample demonstrates using the SpySubtract scanning engine to scan an individual file to determine if it is spyware.
